John Beer

(British, 1860-1930)

A. C. Havell over Fores Gallery. For a short period he is recorded as living on Goldsmith Street, Nottingham. Beer worked in oil, watercolor, and gouache. Flat racing and point-to-point racing were his main subjects. His other key works include a set of eight pictures of The Epsom Derby. He regularly painted racehorse portraits in oils and was one of several artists employed by racecourses to produce spontaneous renderings of race finishes. Beer’s drawings were hung at the racecourse so that late arrivals to the racetrack could see who had won the earlier races.
