John Frederick Herring Sr.
(British, 1795-1865)Herring was a coach driver on the Doncaster-London route by trade when he began painting. His paintings so impressed the wealthy Frank Hawkesworth in 1818 that he was offered a year’s worth of work. Soon he was painting hunters and racehorses for many notable gentry. In 1845 he was appointed painter to the Duchess of Kent, and later Queen Victoria became a benefactor.
