Comfort. It seems so important during a worldwide pandemic. Lifestyles have been changed. Outlooks can vary day by day. In a world that has gone upside down, we cope, comfort, and create. I found it fascinating to study my outlook when I received the Sporting Art Auction Catalog from Crossgate Gallery for their annual auction on Nov. 22. Would my tastes in art be influenced by the worldwide pandemic?

Andrew Wyeth’s Over the Hill, a watercolor painted by Wyeth in 1973 that remained in his personal collection until 2006, brought $109,250, including buyer premium, to headline Sunday’s eighth annual Sporting Art Auction, a collaboration between Keeneland and Cross Gate Gallery of Lexington, Ky., held virtually on Sunday afternoon.

The 2020 Sporting Art Auction, a collaboration between Keeneland and Cross Gate Gallery of Lexington that features 188 lots representing fine sporting art, American paintings and sculptures, will be held virtually Sunday, Nov. 22, beginning at noon ET. The professionals assessing possible purchases in the surrounding barns know all about the mysteries to be read in the head of a horse. In the eye, most obviously, but also the set of the jawbone or the shape and movement of the ears: an anatomical ensemble that can, many claim, condense much of the disposition and outlook and even, ultimately, the quality of a Thoroughbred. But they won’t ever have seen one quite like that guarding the entrance to the lobby of the sales pavilion.

Keeneland and Cross Gate Gallery of Lexington announced Monday that Hall of Fame trainer Bob Baffert has donated items belonging to Triple Crown winners American Pharoah and Justify to the 2018 Sporting Art Auction, with 100 percent of the proceeds from their sale to benefit the Ann Hanley Parkinson’s Research Fund.
