"Golden Tom is a portrait of early western film star Tom Mix. Mix was an fascinating blend of a real, working cowboy and a Hollywood western cowboy. He starred in nearly 300 films, most of them lost today. He befriended Wyatt Earp and was a pallbearer at Earp's funeral in 1929. Newspapers reported that Mix cried during the service. I've painted Tom Mix several times as his personae, wardrobe, and facial features all are of interest to me. He is the embodiment of the nostalgic, glamorized, Hollywoodized west that I try to capture in my pieces." - David Kammerzell
